Overview of the airline and baggage policy
Lion Air is an airline originating in Indonesia. This brand is popular among budget-conscious travellers across Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, due to its high-frequency flights around these countries. You might be able to find a flight you need at an affordable price easily any day.
Like other low-cost airlines, Lion Air's baggage allowance depends on the type of ticket you purchased and the route.
The number of luggage items is not generous. But they do provide a default for carry-on luggage, which is 7kg per person, whilst the allowance for checked luggage varies between different routes, from 10 to 20kg. Some routes don’t offer default checked luggage at all.
Cabin Luggage
For cabin luggage, Lion Air offers one piece of 7kg for free for anyone on board. The dimension of the bag must not exceed 56 x 36 x 23 cm. If not, your bag will be transferred as checked-in luggage.
It's worth noting that size limits can vary depending on the aircraft type:
-
Boeing/Airbus aircraft (Lion Air & Batik Air): up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm
-
ATR aircraft (Wings Air): up to 35 x 30 x 20 cm
If your journey includes a connecting flight operated by Wings Air on an ATR aircraft, the smaller 35 x 30 x 20 cm limit applies throughout.
A personal item bag is also allowed. The airline doesn’t state specifically about its dimensions. It can either be a laptop bag or a handbag. However, according to common regulations, you should choose those that fit under the seat.
As for what counts as a personal item, Lion Air permits laptop bags, women's tote bags, reading materials, cameras, and baby equipment. So you've got plenty of choices here.
In your carry-on bag, all liquids must follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule. Which means, liquid containers must be less than 100ml and placed in a transparent bag separately. The total amount of liquids must not exceed 1 litre. This doesn’t apply to medicine, baby food or those with special dietary requirements.
Finding a backpack that is versatile and fits your every need on a trip? CabinZero 28L Backpack is the perfect choice! Designed in a minimalist style with various colours, the backpack is guaranteed to fit all major airlines' sizes. Each bag is convenient with many straps, belts, and compartments while remaining lightweight and water-resistant.
Checked Bag Allowance
For checked luggage, those who fly with the Lion Promo class will mostly not have any free luggage, except for the flights from Bangkok to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi and Seoul. In these routes, you will be provided 20kg with no more than 2 pieces.
For other routes, the Lion Economy class has checked luggage. You can bring 1 piece up to 10 kg on internal flights within Thailand, and 2 pieces with a total of up to 20kg on international flights.
Excess Fees
Passengers can purchase extra baggage on Thai Lion Air like any other airline.
How much is extra baggage on Lion Air? The price varies from $12 to $67 for domestic flights, and $32 to $180 for international flights.
However, one can’t bring more than 45 kg, and prepaid options are not available for the Bangkok to Seoul route.
Those who haven’t purchased extra luggage but still exceed will have to pay an extra fee for every kilogram at the airport.
For domestic flights, it’s $11 per kilogram, while for international flights it’s $17. The only exception is for Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, where the price is $13 per kilogram.
If you travel in a group with the same PNR, you can show up at the check-in counter together to share the baggage allowance and avoid this fee.

Sport Equipment And CPAP
Regarding sports equipment, Lion Air only offers a standard checked baggage allowance. Which means, they do not have special regulations for this type of baggage. Your equipment must follow the same rules as the regular baggage.
Therefore, certain equipment with larger dimensions, for example, hang gliders, sails, kayaks, etc., is not allowed on board. You can still purchase extra luggage for your sports equipment, like other luggage.
For CPAP, normally, you are allowed to carry them on board without any extra fee. But for Lion Air, they do not state any regulations clearly on their website, so it’s best to confirm directly with them through the Call Centre at +66 2 529 9999 or by email at info@lionairthai.com.
They do offer wheelchairs through this contact at least 48 hours beforehand or at Airport Ticketing Offices on the departure day. The fee for using a wheelchair is around $20 for one time.
Booking and Check-in Process
Starting your trip with Lion Air, getting all the information clear from the booking and check-in process is a good way to have your baggage secure and save your budget. Overall, the procedure is the same as that of other airlines without much of a fuss.
Booking with Lion Air
If you are looking for a flight from Lion Air, the best way is to visit their website and book directly. This ensures the best price available, along with a variety of flight times to choose from. However, the experience might not be smooth.
Begin by filling in your destinations and departure time. The system will provide you with a list of all the flights available. Choose your suitable ones, write the captcha numbers at the end of the page, and continue. At this step, they won’t provide you with the detailed benefits of the flight.
Next step, complete your personal information. Here, you can also register to use a wheelchair or not. After this, you will get to select the add-ons, like beverage & meal, seat number, and most importantly, the luggage. The price for each weight will be shown in the drop-down menu, plus the total price in the right column of the screen.
If you prefer a platform to compare the prices between Lion Air and other airlines, you can still book a flight on a third-party website like Airpaz or Traveloka. Depending on the design, you can see the details of the flight you chose, and some even offer checked luggage right at the ticket-buying step.

Check-in Process
Lion Air offers 02 ways to check in before their flight: online through the BookCabin website & app, or offline at their counter in the airport.
For online check-in, you can start 24 hours before departure for both domestic and international flights. All you need to do is visit the Lion Air website or download the app and fill in your flight information. You will receive an e-boarding pass. Unless you have checked luggage, you can proceed to the gate immediately without further procedure.
If you prefer to check in offline, make sure to arrive at the airport early in case having to queue. The Lion Air check-in counter will open 2 hours before departure for domestic flights, and 3 hours for international ones. The closing time of the counters varies from 45 mins to 90 mins depending on the route. Despite having to wait a bit, you will be supported by the staff and don’t have to do anything much.
Keep in mind that if you are visiting Singapore or Macau, checking in at the airport is mandatory.
FAQ
1. Is Lion Air Strict With Carry-On?
According to the review of fellow travellers, Lion Air is not strict per se. Unless you carry a huge bag that looks obviously overweight, they usually won’t make it hard. However, there are cases in which the plane is full, and they can’t go easy on the weight. Therefore, it’s best if you just go for a bag that is within the size and weight restrictions.
2. Can You Put 30 Kg In One Bag?
Yes, you can, if it’s checked luggage. The maximum limit of a package is 32kg, so 30kg is still acceptable. However, you might have to pay an extra fee, as they usually only provide a default of 10-20kg of checked luggage.
3. Does Lion Air's Ticket Include Free Sports Equipment Allowance?
No. Specifically, they don’t charge an extra fee just for sports equipment. But you will have to pack it within the baggage allowance you got. Which means, if your ticket doesn’t offer any checked luggage, you might have to pay for it in order to travel with your sports equipment, unless it fits as a carry-on.
4. Does Lion Air Have Free Carry-On?
Yes, they do. Lion Air offers a free carry-on of 7kg per person for every passenger on every flight. You can also bring a personal item bag, which can be a laptop backpack or a purse.
