What’s Avelo Airlines Baggage Policy In 2026?

So, you’re exploring the States or the Caribbean and Avelo Airlines is your choice? It’s best to get your head around Avelo Airlines baggage policy before packing.

The same goes for every other airline as well. This is because the final prices upon booking may not be what is shown on the ticket listings at first glance. There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s just how some airlines work, especially low-cost carriers. As travellers, you should always be prepared for this.

Avelo Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC). Their fares are brilliantly cheap for the routes they offer. What to look out for, which is also what we’ll help you with, is breaking down what is included in such great fares: baggage allowance for carry-on and checked bags, booking process, and excess fees.

Overview of Avelo Airlines and Their Baggage Policy

Avelo Airlines is a US-owned airline. The airline was founded in 2021. It’s pretty new for the other US-based airlines we’ve covered so far.

Avelo Airlines offers services as an ultra-low-cost carrier, which means that the fare comes with no frills - just you and the seat. The frills can be bought later if you’d like to. It’s a great option for those looking to tighten the budget of their travels.

Another thing you might need to know to easily navigate the booking process is that Avelo Airlines follows a point-to-point system instead of the hub-and-spoke one like with, for example, American Airlines. You’d find direct, non-stop flights to specific destination pairs, including:

    • Domestic destinations across the US, including Florida, California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest

    • International leisure routes including Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic

There are also no cabin classes. Like we said, no frills. Legroom and baggage are purchased separately.

Latest Avelo Airlines update in 2026

As of 2026, the airline is adding new routes from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to New Haven (Connecticut) and Concord (North Carolina).

Avelo Airlines Baggage Policy In A Nutshell

A passenger wearing CabinZero Classic backpack in Bali Blue and Classic Travel Pillow reach for an airplane overhead bin

Bags must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat.

Avelo Airlines baggage policy is applied per bag and per one-way trip. Before getting into the details, here’s a quick breakdown of what it entails for both cabin and checked baggage in terms of what comes with the ticket and what is up for purchase separately.

What comes with the ticket (free baggage)

    • 1 personal item per passenger (all passengers, all fares)

    • Maximum size of 1 personal item: 43 x 33 x 22 cm (17 x 13 x 9 inches)

    • Must fit under the seat in front of you

What is up for purchase separately (paid baggage)

    • Carry-on bag ( must fit the overhead bin): 55 x 35 x 22 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches), approximately $35 to $70 per one-way trip

    • Checked bag: up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and 157 cm (62 linear inches), approximately $34 to $70 for the first bag

Avelo baggage weight and dimension limits are pretty standard compared to other bigger airlines. If you travel extremely light, fares can be really budget-friendly.

Avelo Airlines Baggage Policy For Carry-On

Carry-on baggage, or cabin baggage, is what you bring onto the aircraft. The term refers to both a personal item and a different cabin bag. Avelo Airlines baggage policy allows you to bring both a personal item and a cabin bag onboard.

However, only the personal item is free. A cabin bag can be purchased with respective Avelo carry-on baggage fees.

What Is The Baggage Limit For Avelo Airlines?

Here’s the size and weight for each type of carry-on baggage:

    • Carry-on size: 55 x 35 x 22 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches)

    • Personal item size: 43 x 33 x 22 cm (17 x 13 x 9 inches)

    • No published weight limit for either bag (you must be able to stow and lift it yourself)

Note: Active-duty military are allowed 1 cabin bag free of charge.

Do You Have To Pay For Carry-On Bags With Avelo?

Yes. It’s one of the most important things you should know about Avelo Airlines baggage policy before booking a flight.

Keep this rule in mind when you pack:

    • Personal item fits under the seat = free

    • Cabin bag fits in the overhead bin = paid

To avoid Avelo Airlines baggage fees, check your load to see whether it qualifies as a personal item or not. Here’s what a personal item on an Avelo Air flight looks like.

    • Be 43 x 33 x 22 cm (17 x 13 x 9 inches) or smaller
    • A purse
    • A briefcase
    • A laptop case
    • A cabin-sized 28L backpack (daypack)
    • A small camera case
    • A small shoulder bag

Everything else that is bigger than the size limit above or is not in the same category as these items will not be considered a personal item.

How strict is Avelo Airlines with personal item size?

With a no-frill baseline like Avelo Airlines baggage policy, you might not be able to find a wiggle room for excess bags.

In terms of quantity, they will count your piece, so if you bring two pieces on board, one will be flagged as a cabin bag and be charged, regardless of both being undersized.

In terms of sizing, if you bring only 1 personal item, but it exceeds the dimension limits, it will be flagged as a cabin bag. If it exceeds that of a cabin bag as well, it will be considered a checked bag, and so on. You’ll also be charged the Avelo air baggage fees.

So, the answer is: They’re quite strict. However, you can fly comfortably if you understand their policy and keep your load lightweight.

How to get free bags on Avelo?

Some passengers are allowed free bags on Avelo beyond the personal item. For example:

    • Active-duty military: 1 free carry-on bag, 2 free checked bags

    • Wine travels free programme: 1 packed case of wine can be checked in for free, but it might depend on the routes

    • Strollers and car seats for children

For everybody else, the most reliable way to avoid Avelo baggage fees altogether is to pack into your free personal item.

A cabin-sized backpack, such as the CabinZero’s 28L Backpack, can carry more than you think.

    Avelo Airlines’ carry-on baggage size is 43 x 33 x 22 cm (17 x 13 x 9 inches) or smaller. CabinZero’s 28L Backpack can fit well below that with the dimensions of 39 x 29.5 x 20 cm.

Also, they’re soft-sided, so in a way, there is wiggle room if you pack things well enough and stick to travel-sized essentials only.

Avelo Airlines baggage policy for checked baggage

Avelo Airlines baggage policy states all checked bags are paid add-ons. This means that there is no free exception for regular passengers. More expensive fares do not equal more checked bags with Avelo.

CabinZero’s note: Checked baggage purchased upon booking is always cheaper than at the airport. Some routes may subject checked baggage to embargoes, so always check your bookings carefully.

Since their baseline is 0 free checked bags, if you bring 3 bags, you pay for 3 bags. It is not considered excess baggage for the quantity of bags. On the other hand, excess baggage with Avelo Airlines is for oversized and overweight bags.

Your excess baggage can be either oversized or overweight, or both at the same time. Here’s a quick summary of the fees:

    • Overweight bags of 22 to 31 kg (51 to 70 lbs): around $100 (approximately £80)

    • Oversized bags of 158 to 203 cm (63 to 80 linear inches): around $100 (approximately £80)

    • Both: around $200 (approximately £158)

Bags that are heavier than 31 kg and bigger than 203 cm will not be accepted. You’d have to use a third-party service. As of 2026, there are no baggage embargoes for Avelo Airlines.

A good tip is to split your load into different bags because paying for checked baggage, which you’d have to do anyway, is cheaper than paying for excess baggage.

Avelo Airlines Baggage Policy for sports equipment

Sports equipment is accepted as checked baggage. The fees for such items are the same as checked baggage.

This means that if you travel with 1 personal item and 1 packed bag of an item weighing up to 22 kg and measuring less than 157 cm, you are expected to pay $34 to $70 upon booking. Otherwise, the excess baggage fees are applied.

    Sports equipment includes:

    • Archery equipment set

    • Baseball equipment

    • Bicycles with detachable parts

    • Boogie-board, kneeboard, or wakeboard

    • Bowling equipment

    • Camping equipment

    • Fencing and kendo equipment

    • Fishing tackle box and fishing equipment

    • Golf bag

    • Hockey or lacrosse equipment

    • Javelins and pole-vaulting equipment

    • Scuba equipment

    • Skating equipment

    • Snow ski equipment

    • Surfing equipment

    • Water ski equipment

Avelo Air requires them to be carefully packed as one unit. For example, if you travel with a bowling equipment set which has the ball and the shoes, then they must be in one bowling bag and not stored in your carry-on backpack.

    CPAP and medical devices

Medical devices do not count against your total baggage allowance. You can travel with them at no extra cost. Though they do not require notice in advance, it’s always better to do so in case you’re unsure whether your medical device needs any special packing.

For POCs, you have to arrive at the check-in counter at least 90 minutes before boarding. Read more about it here.

    FAQs

Need more information? Here are some frequently asked questions about Avelo Airlines baggage policy.

Can I Bring A Purse And A Carry-On For Free?

Yes for the purse, but no for the carry-on.

With Avelo Airlines baggage policy, here’s the carry-on allowance for every ticket.

    • Free allowance: 1 personal item, max 43 x 33 x 22 cm (17 x 13 x 9 inches)

    • Available for purchase:  1 carry-on bag, max 55 x 35 x 22 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches)

Personal items can be a purse, a laptop bag, or a small backpack, all of which must fit under the seat in front of you.

A carry-on bag can be a bigger backpack or a small suitcase which must fit in the overhead bin. You must be able to lift and stow it away yourself. Bulky or visually overweight/oversized bags might be inspected, so it’s best to stick to cabin-sized carriers.

Depending on your route and how far in advance you purchase, Avelo carry-on baggage fees can range from $35 to $70 per trip.

Can I Bring Liquid In My Luggage?

You can pack liquid, gel, and aerosol in both carry-on and checked luggage. The allowance is different for each.

In your carry-on, liquids must follow the 3-1-1 Rule:

    • Each liquid container (bottle, packet, or tube) must be 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less (3)

    • All containers must fit inside 1 bag of no more than 1 litre (1)

    • Each passenger is allowed 1 liquid bag (1)

    • Typical liquids allowed in carry-on include water, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, hairspray, perfume, makeup, skincare, and mouthwash.

In your checked luggage, the allowance for liquids is much more generous and often not specified for most leisure flights.

However, flammable liquids and a very large quantity of aerosols are typically prohibited.

Do Infants Under 2 Get Baggage Allowance On Avelo?

It depends on whether your child sits in your lap or has their own seat.

If you purchase a separate ticket for your infant, they are allowed the same baggage allowance as the adult ticket. This means 1 free personal item, with carry-on and checked bags available for purchase.

There is no fee for a stroller, car seat, booster seat, or breast pump (if it qualifies as a medical device). Families with children under 2 can also receive pre-boarding.

Avelo Airlines baggage policy made easy with CabinZero
